NCAA Picks 9-27-08

Last week I went 2-1.  This week should have been called SEC picks because these are the only games I like.  Let’s face it, SEC football is the best football.

Tennessee @ (9) Auburn (-6.5)

ATS: UT 0-3, Auburn 1-3

Home: Auburn 2-1, Away: Vols 0-1

Pick: Auburn

Both teams are coming off losses.  Auburn has won the last three meetings.  I could throw a lot of stats on here but all you need to know is that Tennessee has no quarterback and Auburn has a tough defense.  Tennessee is just bad.

Auburn 20-10

Arkansas @ (7) Texas (-27.5)

ATS: Arkansas 0-2, Texas 3-0

Home: Texas 2-0, Away: Arkansas 0-0

Pick: Texas

Arkansas lost last week to Alabama 49-14.  Don’t let their 2-1 record fool you, Arkansas is not very good.  They barely beat UL Monroe and Western Illinois by a combined 5 points at home.  On the other hand, Texas has beenbeating up on their cupcakes by 113 points combined.

Arkansas is 95th in rushing yards allowed per game while Texas rushes for, on average, over 200 yards per game and gain over 500 yards in total offense.  Also, the Crimson Tide are 102nd in points allowed.  That doesn’t bode well for them against a fast, high powered Texas team.

I know the points are high but there is no way Texas doesn’t score 50 in this one.

Texas 55-17

(13) Alabama @ (3) Georgia (-6.5)

ATS: Bama 3-1, Georgia 2-0-1

Home: Georgia 2-0, Away: Alabama 2-0

Pick: Alabama

Alabama beat Clemson on the road by 24 and Arkansas on the road by 35.  Those numbers look impressive but I think it’s safe to say that Clemson and Arkansas are not that strong.  Bama beat two good names in college football but this year they’re not two very good programs.  Alabama is ranked 7th in points allowed and rushing yards per gam.  The Crimson Tide are only giving up an average of 55 yards rushing per game.  On the flip side, they are not very effective throwing the ball.  They rank 106th in passing offense.

Georgia looked awesome last week at Arizona State.  They look very quick on both offense and defense.  They have to be able to establish a passing game against Alabama or I think it will be a tough night for them.

Georgia looks like the better team but I have a strange feeling about Bama.  Sometimes you have to go with your gut.  I think Georgia wins but Alabama cover this one.

Georgia 24-20
